Ryder Cup -joukkueen ikoneiksi nousseet konkarit Sergio Garcia ja Lee Westwood muistuttivat LIV Golfin mediatilaisuudessa, että European Tourin jäseninä heille pitäisi sääntöjen mukaan antaa mahdollisuus Euroopan edustamiseen myös seuraavissa ottelusarjoissa.
Lee Westwood ja Sergio Garcia ilmaisivat syksyllä USA:n voitettua Euroopan murskaavasti Ryder Cupissa halustaan puolustaa vanhan mantereern mainetta myös seuraavissa turnauksissa.
Lee Westwoodille European Tourin pomot ja edellisista kapteeneista koostuva raati olisi vahvojen huhujen mukaan antanut 2023 Rooman otteluun kapteenin tehtävän.
Kevääällä 49 vuotta täyttänyt englantilainen kieltäytyi. Syyksi hän ilmoitti sen, että haluaa vielä kerran mahtua joukkueeseen pelaajana.
Sergio Garcia on ollut mukana syksystä 1999 (2010 apulaiskapteenina). Euroopan kaikkien aikojen pistekuninkaan mahtumista seuraavaan joukkueeseen pelikuntonsa osalta hyvin harva kyseenalaistaa.
Parivaljakon siirtyminen LIV Golfin sopimuspelaaajiksi muutti tilanteen kertaheitolla.
Ainakin DP World Touria pyörittävien European Tourin pomojen ajatuksissa ja suunnitelmissa kilpailevalle kiertueelle palvelujaan myyvät suljetaan myös Ryder Cupista.
Garciaa ja Westwoodia ei ole ET:n jäsenyydestä ainakaan vielä potkittu ulos.
Ensimmäinen sakko Lontoon kisaan osallistumisesta on rikkureille langetettu 116 000 euron suuruiseksi.
Samassa tiedotteessa ET:n toimitusjohtaja Keith Pelley muistutti, että seuraaviin kisoihin osallistumisesta langetetaan lisää sanktioita.
Jo aiemmin sekä PGA Tour, kuin myös DP World Tour ovat ilmoittaneet, että LIV Golfin kisoissa pelaavat eivät tule valituiksi Ryder Cupiin.
Garcia, Westwood ja heidän kanssaan ennen kisaa samassa tiedotustilaisuudessa ollut Martin Kaymer eivät Portlandissa antamiensa lausuntojen perusteella usko sovittamattomaan riitatilanteeseen.
”Toivon, että minulle avautuu edelleen mahdollisuus tulla valituksi Ryder Cupiin pelaajana. Näin uskon myös heidän ( European Tourin johdon) omalta puoleltaan ajattelevan. Tämä asia ei tässä vaiheessa ole kiinni meistä”, Garcia viittasi jälkimmäisessä tapauksessa LIV Golfin kisoja pelaaviin kiertueen jäseniin.
”Pidämme sormemme ristissä sen eteen, että pääsemme muiden tavoin ryhmään, joista joukkue valitaan”, Garcia kertoi omana kantanaan tiedotustilaisuudessa.

Lee Westwood meni omissa päättelyissään pidemmälle historiaan ja sääntökirjaan.
”En tiedä miksi meidän ( LIV:lla pelaavien eurooppalaisten) osallistumisoikeutemme Ryder Cupiin olisi uhattuna?”
”Vuodesta 1997 jolloin olin ensimmäistä kertaa mukana, joukkue on valittu European Tourin jäsenistä. Nykyisin jäsenen edellytetään pelaavan vuosittain neljä kisaa. Miksi sitä muutettaisiin nyt?”
”Minun käsittääkseni kaikille jäsenille kuuluu edelliset ehdot täyttäessään mahdollisuus olla ehdokkaana Ryder Cup -joukkueeseen”, Lee Westwood yksinkertaisti mielipiteensä.
European Tour ei ole erottanut LIV Golfin kisoissa ilman lupaa hakemuksestaan huolimatta pelanneita jäseniään.
Seuraavia juonikäänteitä riidassa ja kädenväännössä on turha lähteä ennakoimaan. Varmaa on ainakin se, että kaikkien osapuolten juristit ovat jatkossakin työllistettyjä.
Sergio Garcian (+3) sijoitus 48 pelaajan kisassa on ennen kahta viimeistä päivää 30:s. Lee Westwoodin (+4) sijaluku on 37.
”Rakastan Ryder Cupia. Haluaisin hyvin mielelläni pelata tulevaisuudessa Leen ja Sergion kipparoimissa joukkueissa”, Martin Kaymer säesti tiedotustilaisuudessa Westwoodin ja Garcian tulevaisuuteen liittyvää spekulointia.
