Ryder Cupiin villin kortin saanut Justin Thomas ei tukehduta itseään valmentajien ohjeilla, vaan on ottanut svinvistään ja lähipelistään enemmän vastuuta valmistautuessaan vajaan kolmen viikon päästä Roomassa käynnistyvään hegemoniaotteluun Eurooppaa vastaan.
Meneillään olevan vuoden näytöillä Justin Thomasilla ei pitänyt olla mitään asiaa USA:n Ryder Cup -joukkueeseen.
Thomas on sijoittunut vain kahdesti kymmenen joukkoon. Majoreissa hän karsiutui kolme kertaa ja oli ainoassa neljän kierroksen majorissaan 65. FedEx Cupissa taival päättyi jo ennen ensimmäistä finaalia.
Kun Zach Johnson valitsi villillä kortilla pelaajia, hän nappasi mukaan Thomasin ennen kovianäyttöjä kauden aikana antaneita Keegan Bradleya, Lucas Gloveria, Cameron Youngia.
Moni muukin vähemmän esillä ollut kandidaatti olisi mennyt heittämällä vuoden 2023 menestyksiä mitattaessa Thomasin ohi.
Hänen pelastuksekseen nousivat aiemmat, kieltämättä erittäin hyvät näytöt Ryder Cupista.
Kaksi aiempaa kisaa ovat tuottaneet kuusi voittoa, yhden tasapelin ja kaksi tappiota.
Niin uskomattomalta kuin se tuntuukin, ei USA ole voittanut Ryder Cupia Euroopassa pelatuissa otteluissa sitten syksyn 1993.
Rooman otteluun USA lähtee, kuten aina ennenkin, selvänä ennakkosuosikkina.
Voittopaineita on molemmilla joukkueilla, pelaajilla sekä kapteeneilla.
Justin Thomas on USA:n tiimissä se palanen, jonka edesottamuksia seurataan hyvin tarkasti.
Kapteeni Zach Johnsoniin kohdistuvat syyttävät sormet, mikäli USA jää kakkoseksi ja Thomasin peli ei kulje.

Justin Thomas on asioista yleensä erittäin hyvin perillä olevan Golf Channelin Todd Lewisin mukaan siirtänyt ainakin toistaiseksi syrjään puttivalmentajansa John Grahamin, jonka kanssa hän on työskennellyt vuodesta 2020.
Svingivalmentajan roolissa oleva isä Mike Thomas seuraa tällä erää jälkikasvunsa edesottamuksia myös tavallista etäämpää.
”JT haluaa työskennellä tässä vaiheessa entistä omavaraisemmin, vastaten linjauksista”, Lewis arvioi lähteisiinsä perustuen oheisella videolla.
Caddienä jatkaa Thomasin apuna syksystä 2021 toiminut Jim ”Bones” Mackay, joka muistetaan Phil Mickelsonin pitkäaikaisena aisaparina, ja arvioidaan yleisesti yhdeksi parhaista ammatissaan.
Justin Thomas osallistuu seuraavalla viikolla Kaliforniassa järjestettävään Fortinet Championshipiin, joka käynnistää PGA Tourin kauden 2023-2024.
Tämä on ymmärrettävää, sillä pitkään alle oman tasonsa pelannut entinen maailmanlistan ykkönen haluaa muutaman viikon tauon jälkeen onnistumisen alle ennen Italian matkaa.
Ryder Cup -joukkueen pelaajista mukana on myös kahdesti peräkkäin kisan voittanut Max Homa.
