Tom Hoge Pebble Beachin sankari: ”Tunne on täysin uskomaton”

Supertähdet Patrick Cantlay ja Jordan Spieth jäivät varjoon, kun kiertueen rivipelaajiin lukeutuva Tom Hoge katkaisi 11 vuoden voitottoman putkensa. Hänen caddielleen Henry Dianalle ykköstila oli ensimmäinen 23 vuoden työuralla.
PGA Tourilla juhlittiin toisen kerran peräkkäin ensikertalaisvoittajaa sunnuntaina.
Edellisviikolla San Diegossa Luke List pisti supertähdet kuriin. Sunnuntaina Pebble Beach Linksilla areenan otti viimeisillä reiíllä haltuunsa 32-vuotias Tom Hoge.
Melkoinen osa tähdistä oli samaan aikaan Saudi-Arabiassa, mutta Fedex Cupin ykkönen Patrick Cantlay, sekä maailmanlistan aiempi ykkönen Jordan Spieth olivat sunnuntaina kumpikin vuorollaan kärjessä, Hoge heidän takanaan.

Viimeiset kahdeksan reikää Hoge pelasi neljä alle parin, Spieth jätti viimeisillä kaksi mainiota birdiepaikkaa käyttämättä, söhri bunkkerin kautta bogeyn 17:lla, joutui taipumaan kakkoseksi.
11 vuotta ammattilaisena pelannut Hoge voitti uransa alussa Kanadan Tourin kisan ja 32 000 dollaria.
Pääkiertueella hän on kiertännyt kaudesta 2015 korkeintaan kohtuullisella menestyksellä.
Alkanut kausi on ollut Hogelle erinomainen jo ennen sunnuntain ykköstilaa.
Sijoitukset 4-MC-2-MC saivat nyt jatkokseen voiton, joka tuottaa hänelle reilut 1,566 miljoona dollaria sekä paikan The Mastersiin ensimmäistä kertaa uralla.

”Olen odottanut tätä voittoa 11 vuotta. Tunne on täysin uskomaton”, Hoge jakoi mediatilaisuudessa tuntemuksen, joka useimmilta pitkän tauon jälkeen ykköstilaan yltäneiltä kuullaan.
Vähintään yhtä onnellinen hän oli caddiensa Henry Dianan puolesta. Tämä on työskennellyt 23 vuoden ajan caddiena, isäntinä on ollut Charles Howell III:n ja Bill Haasin tapaisia mestareita.

Maailmanlistalla Hoge nousi jo sijalle 39. Saudi Internatiolissa voiton 27,6 metrin eagle-putillaan napannut Harold Varner III on 45. ja kiinni paikassa Mastersiin, mikäli pysyy 50:n joukossa maaliskuun loppuun.
